On arrival at OR Tambo you will meet with our driver at the Tourism Information Desk in terminal A – International Arrivals. Get a glimpse of the City of Gold – Johannesburg – before entering the world-renowned township of Soweto. Arrive at Lebo’s Soweto Backpackers and get settled with a welcome drink! Dinner can be arranged.
After breakfast, take a two- or four-hour (optional extra) cycle tour of Soweto that will take you to see some of the most interesting historical sites in the township. Some of the highlights include a workers’ hostel, Meadowlands, the site of the 1976 student uprising, the Hector Pieterson Memorial, Nelson Mandela’s former home and a local pub called a shebeen. If you choose the four-hour tour, you will end it with a local lunch – “Kota” – a bread bun filled with delicious Soweto chicken or veggie stew and a drink or two! You can spend your afternoon at our community park, playing with the kids and engage in daily activities in our Youth Club. After a hectic day relax around the dinner table and enjoy a home-cooked meal. Warm up around the fireplace at night listening to our African beats.
After breakfast, you will be taken to the Apartheid Museum. The museum is the first of its kind and illustrates the rise and fall of apartheid. It uses film, traditional exhibits and architecture to take you through the epic saga of our country’s history. For anyone wanting to understand and experience what apartheid South Africa was really like, a visit to the Apartheid Museum is fundamental.
After spending time here you can go to Gold Reef City where you can learn about the development of this city from the time gold was first discovered here. Or you can take the fun option to go on some of the rides at the theme park or try your hand at some gambling at the casino.
After breakfast, our driver will shuttle you to Gold Reef City where you will hop onto the Johannesburg city sightseeing bus and travel into the city centre where you can hop off at places such as Newtown – Johannesburg’s cultural precinct, Braamfontein with its hip student hang outs, coffee shops and small eateries and Ghandi Square in the heart of the city. Travel up to the 51st floor in Carlton Centre and take in this huge city at the ‘Top of Africa’. Continue to Constitutional Hill, previously a prison for many of South Africa’s anti-Apartheid activists. Today it is the country’s constitutional court representing democracy and justice. Arrive back at Gold Reef City where our driver will pick you up and take you back to Soweto for a scrumptious dinner.
After breakfast, the day can be spent at your own leisure. After spending some time in Soweto you have now got to know how safe and relaxed this township is. Take a walk on your own, meet and greet people. Play with the kids in the park and playground. Browse through the local souvenir market and support Soweto’s local traders. Have a lunch at Vilakazi Street – the only street in the world to have housed two Nobel Peace prize winners – Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu.
